This was appreciated by the jurors of the “MUST HAVE” plebiscite organized by the Łódź Design Festival, who awarded the collection and its author a distinction in this year's edition. With its simple, geometric forms and vertical decoration, Metropolis refers to contemporary metropolises, intersected by skyscrapers, streets and light breaking through between them. It is also inspired by the visual language of Fritz Lang's cult film, architecture and decorations in the Art Deco style. A circle, a straight line, an acute angle – it would seem that compared to the rich cuts of traditional crystal goblets and decanters, these are easy shapes that do not require many hours of work. However, it must be borne in mind that what we see as simple is the most complicated in the world of crystal. “Crystal glass is reluctant to submit to the rigors of geometry. Symmetry and minimalism of form require glass without even the smallest flaws, so glassworkers must demonstrate their experience and skills in working with capricious material. Minimalist, regular cuts are also a challenge for grinders, because they have to convey the precision of mathematical calculations with their handwork,” says the designer of the collection, Sebastian Pietkiewicz. Metropolis is therefore not only an expression of current minimalist trends in the design of crystal vessels, but also an example of craftsmanship.
